Chairman’s Letter – August

First I would like to congratulate our teams.

At the Area Horse Trials held at Winkleigh our Junior Team came second, our best Senior Team was fifth, and Louise Garland qualified as an Individual in the Open.

The Area Dressage was held at St Leonards and what a result for East Cornwall! The Junior Team of Hannah Jolliff, Emma Platts, Joanna Philp and Frankie Gilbert qualified in first place, and our Senior Teams of Sally Callow, Mel Wilton, Katie Nichols and Hayley Matthews; and Pippa Hobbs, Amanda Carpenter, Sarah Luck and Val Walkden were first and second respectively. We also had the winning (but only) Pair with Cathy Busby and Pippa Hobbs.

Other events in July were a successful Evening Dressage, the very popular Mini Midi Maxi Show Jumping, and our Open Family Show which was held at Middle Taphouse. This last was blessed with good weather and a good turnout.

As you will know by now, we decided to postpone the Show Jumping Festival from July 31st to August 28th because Downderry Show moved to the31st July when they were rained off earlier in the month. The Mini One Day Event which had been planned for August 28th has been cancelled this year. This is due to the new safety regulations for fixing portable cross country fences. A few of the new fixings will be tried out on the portable fences which are an optional part of the Pleasure Ride in September.

Coming up in August we have our last Mini Midi Maxi, the Evening Dressage, and the Training Day which has been moved from the 13th to the 20th to accommodate Andrew Lovell’s availability. He is a very popular instructor who covers a wide range of capabilities. Please contact Emily Harvey or Sally Callow for further information.

Finally I have received information from Sophie Fitzmaurice who helps organise and run the Fit to Ride Clinics which are led by Jon Pitts. She asked if our members would be interested in attending such a Clinic. Basically “Fit to Ride uses innovative programmes to explain issues and boost your Safety, Confidence and Performance in the saddle”. You can get more information at or on 07976 559983. The initial presentation costs £200 and usually consists of an explanatory talk, a break, and a more interactive session. We would need about 20 interested people and a venue with a small hall and a riding arena. Please let me know if you want to take this further.
